About Financial Trends Australia
What is Financial Trends Australia?
Financial Trends Australia is an institutional-grade quantitative investment research platform for self-directed investors. We score and rank the global listed equity universe using the Alpha360 methodology, a multi-factor model developed by Professor Stewart Jones at the University of Sydney over more than two decades of academic research.
Our goal is to give serious retail investors, SMSF trustees and advisers the same kind of systematic, data-driven research process used by professional fund managers.
Who is behind it?
Financial Trends Australia was co-founded by Henry Jones (CEO) and Professor Stewart Jones (FASSA, PhD, FCPA), Professor of Accounting and Financial Analysis at the University of Sydney. Professor Jones developed the Alpha360 methodology and is a recognised academic voice on financial distress prediction and quantitative equity analysis.
Henry built the commercial platform (site, data pipelines, portal, payment infrastructure) and previously held a senior role at an Australian equity research firm, where he executed more than two dozen ASX capital raises.
Is Financial Trends Australia regulated?
Yes. Financial Trends Australia Pty Ltd (ABN 65 091 191 472) is a Corporate Authorised Representative (CAR No. 001320926) of MF & Co. Asset Management Pty Ltd (AFSL No. 520442). We are authorised to provide general financial product advice on basic deposit products, deposit products, government debentures, stocks and bonds, and securities, to retail and wholesale clients.
Full details are in our Financial Services Guide.
Does Financial Trends Australia give personal financial advice?
No. We provide general advice only. We don't consider your personal objectives, financial situation or needs. Our research is designed to inform your own analysis and decisions, not to replace a personal adviser.
If you need advice tailored to your circumstances, speak to a licensed financial adviser.
Is The Jones Report right for me?
Is The Jones Report worth it?
That depends on the kind of investor you are. The Jones Report is built for people who want to make their own investment decisions, but want institutional-grade research behind them rather than guesswork, broker tips, or the noise of social media.
The value is not a single hot stock. It is breadth and discipline: every covered company is scored the same way, rated, and explained, so you can compare names on a like-for-like basis and understand the reasoning behind each call. If you simply want a tip to punt on, this is not that. If you want a repeatable, evidence-led process to bring to your own decisions, that is exactly what it is.
You do not have to take it on faith. We offer a free walkthrough so you can see the methodology working on real companies before you pay anything.
How is it different from a stockbroker or free research?
Most free and broker-supplied research is narrative-driven and, often, conflicted. A firm that earns commission when you trade, or fees when a company raises capital, is not a neutral source. The story tends to come first, and the numbers are arranged to support it.
The Jones Report works the other way around. The Alpha360 methodology scores the company first, and the written research explains what the data says. We do not run a brokerage, underwrite placements, or earn anything on what you buy or sell. Our only relationship is with our members, which is what lets the research follow the evidence, including to a downgrade.
How is it different from services like the Motley Fool or Simply Wall St?
Those are well-known services, and the right fit varies from one investor to the next. The distinction with The Jones Report is its foundation: it is built on the Alpha360 methodology, developed by Professor Stewart Jones through decades of peer-reviewed academic research into corporate failure, credit risk, and statistical learning. It is not a set of editor picks or an off-the-shelf scoring app.
Coverage is focused on the markets Australian investors actually hold, with deep ASX and US coverage, and every call comes with the score, the factor profile, named peer comparisons, and the written reasoning. You see what the conclusion is built on, not just the conclusion.
Do you tell me when to sell, or only what to buy?
Both. Coverage is rated and kept current, not a one-way list of ideas to buy and forget. When a company’s score deteriorates, the research is updated and the rating revised, including downgrades. The point is to tell you where a company stands now, not where it stood when it was first written up.
What is the track record? Will I beat the market?
The Alpha360 methodology has been tested across long historical windows and multiple market regimes, including the dot-com bust, the global financial crisis, the COVID drawdown, and the 2022 rate reset. The historical record is documented and available to members.
That said, no honest research service can promise you will beat the market. Past performance is not a reliable indicator of future performance, and The Jones Report does not guarantee any particular return. What we offer is a disciplined, transparent process and the evidence behind every call, so the decisions you make are better informed.
Do I need to be an experienced investor or an active trader?
No. The research is written so that a serious non-specialist can follow it. The scorecard gives you a fast read; the written note gives you the depth if you want it. You do not need to be glued to a screen or trade frequently.
The Jones Report is built for considered, longer-term decisions rather than day-trading or short-term signals. If you are earlier in your investing, the walkthrough is a good way to see whether the style suits you.
Is The Jones Report suitable for my SMSF?
Many members are self-managed super fund trustees who value an independent, systematic research process. However, The Jones Report provides general research only. It does not take into account your fund’s objectives, financial situation, investment strategy, or the particular circumstances and obligations that apply to SMSF trustees.
You should consider whether general research is appropriate for your situation, have regard to your fund’s investment strategy, and seek licensed financial or specialist SMSF advice if you are unsure. The research informs your decisions; it does not make them for you.
Do you have any conflicts of interest? Do you hold the stocks you cover?
The Jones Report is structured to avoid the obvious conflicts. We do not operate a brokerage, underwrite or earn fees on capital raisings, or receive commissions on what members trade. A name is rated on the data, not on what is convenient to promote.
How the firm manages conflicts of interest, including any policies on personal trading and disclosure, is set out in our Financial Services Guide.
How much time does it take to use?
As little or as much as you want. You do not need to read everything we publish. Most members start with the companies they already hold or are considering, and with the High Conviction list, then read the full note only where they want the detail. The scorecard is designed to give you the headline in seconds.
Can I act on the research through my own broker?
Yes. The Jones Report is research, not a brokerage. We do not execute trades or take custody of your money. You act on the research through whatever broker or platform you already use, in your own time and at your own discretion.
Who is The Jones Report not for?
It is not for someone looking for hot tips, day-trading signals, or a guaranteed way to get rich. It is not a personal advice service, and it is not someone to manage your money for you; we do not take custody of funds or place trades. And it is not a substitute for advice tailored to your circumstances.
If what you want is a disciplined, transparent, evidence-led research process to inform decisions you make yourself, that is exactly who it is built for.
Methodology
What is Alpha360?
Alpha360 is the proprietary scoring methodology underpinning the platform. It evaluates each company on multiple dimensions: valuation, growth, financial strength, capital market performance, analyst sentiment, earnings performance, operating efficiency and cash flow performance. These are combined into a single composite score from 0 to 100.
The model was developed and refined by Professor Stewart Jones over more than two decades of academic research and has been applied across global equity markets.
How is the score calculated?
Each company is evaluated against its peers on a series of fundamental and market-derived factors. Inputs are normalised, weighted, and combined into sub-scores for each of the eight pillars, then aggregated into the headline Alpha360 score.
Scores are recalculated regularly as new financial data and market information becomes available, so a company's position is always current.
How wide is the coverage?
A broad universe of global listed equities, with a particular focus on the ASX and US markets. Coverage spans large-cap, small-cap, and a broad cross-section of sectors and industries.
Is the methodology backtested?
Yes. The methodology has been extensively tested across long historical windows and across multiple market regimes, including the dot-com bust, the GFC, the COVID drawdown and the rate-cycle reset of 2022. Past performance is not a reliable indicator of future performance, but the historical record is documented and available to members.
How is it different from other research providers?
Most retail research is narrative-driven: an analyst has a view on a company and writes it up. Alpha360 is the inverse. The methodology generates the rankings, and our written research explains why a company looks attractive (or doesn't) on the data.
That means recommendations follow the methodology rather than personal conviction. It also means coverage is far broader than what a small analyst team could produce by hand.
